Hello,
a bit about me and the Challenge program:
Welcome to my Challenge website. This website showcases what I have learned during my time in the Challenge program. Challenge is a senior leadership program led by Juan-Pierre van der Walt at the University of Pretoria. The program focuses on teaching student leaders the ability to develop their strategic leadership skills through the frame of Social Justice.
I have a long history of student leadership at the University of Pretoria. I served three terms on the executive committee of Day House Luminous which is a structure within the University. Over the three terms I had the following portfolios: Internal Culture, Marketing & Communications, Vice Chairperson, Chairperson.
I have received my BA Languages degree majoring in English and I am currently studying a BA Hons degree in Visual Culture Studies I also work at the Visual arts department as a tutor for the first years. Writing and art has always been my main passions in life but I have found that I enjoy working with others. My years in student leadership has really sparked my interest in social justice and that is why I jumped for the opportunity to be a part of the challenge program. Student leadership has taught me that it is vital to set goals in order to achieve greatness – my goal this year was to care more about my environment and the people who reside within it – challenge has been a tool to achieve this goal and has equipped me with the skills I need to continue growing in my leadership and social activism.
I believe that a person’s point of view is always evolving and that one needs to keep an open-mind. I always aim to make the process of leadership and self-growth enjoyable for everyone around me and I love touching the lives of others. I promote a can-do attitude and positive thinking and tend to find creative ways to do damage control in unforeseen circumstances. As a leader I believe that there are set rules that need to be taken into consideration, but I also believe that there is always room for change. I am democratic in my ways of working with people which gives a satisfactory result among the team but takes a lot of time to accomplish. I am emotional but it rarely clouds my judgement as I focus on keeping an approachable yet unyielding persona.
